If the idea of being photographed makes you feel anxious, uneasy and nervous, you’re not alone. How many times did I hear: “I’m not comfortable in front of the camera”, “I don’t know how to pose”, "Where should I put my hands?"
The good news? You don’t need to know how to pose, and you certainly don’t need to be “photogenic” to have images that feel natural, confident and true to you.
Feeling awkward is normal
Most people aren’t models, and very few feel instantly comfortable being photographed. Standing in front of a camera can feel exposing, especially if you’re used to being behind the scenes in your business. My job isn’t to make you perform but to create a space where you feel relaxed and guided.
You don’t have to know how to pose
One of the biggest myths about photography is that clients are expected to know what to do in front of the camera. In reality, posing is part of the photographer’s role.
During a session, I guide you with clear directions, from how to stand and move, to where to place your hands and how to shift your weight. The goal isn’t stiff or forced poses, but natural movements that feel comfortable and flattering.
Natural images come from comfort, not perfection

The most compelling images don’t come from trying to look perfect. They come from moments when you feel at ease.
That’s why I focus on:
Gentle prompts instead of rigid poses
Small movements that create natural expressions
Conversation and pauses that allow you to relax
Often, clients are surprised to realize their favorite images were taken when they weren’t “trying” at all.
You’re allowed to take your time
There’s no rush to get it right instantly. A good session allows space to warm up, settle in and find your rhythm. Feeling comfortable in front of the camera is a process, and that process is built into how I work.
Whether we’re in my studio or in your own space, the goal is always the same: images that feel like you.

It’s okay to have fun with it
While professional photography is an investment and the images matter, the experience itself doesn’t need to feel heavy or overly serious. In fact, some of the best photos happen when we allow a bit of lightness into the process.
A session can be focused and intentional and enjoyable at the same time. Laughing, moving, taking a moment to breathe, or even feeling a little silly is all part of the process. When you’re relaxed and having fun, your expressions soften, your body language becomes natural and the images feel more natural.
A few simple tips to feel more comfortable
Spend a few minutes in front of a mirror to get familiar with your expressions and posture, not to perfect them, just to feel more at ease.
Choose clothes that feel comfortable and confident, not just “photogenic.” If it feels good on you, it will photograph well.
Take time to get ready in a way that feels like you. Whether professionally done or not, hair & makeup can help you arrive feeling confident.
Arrive a few minutes early to settle in, breathe, and ease into the space before we begin.
Try not to overthinking it, there's no need to stress or anticipate. Simply arrive ready to be guided.
A final thought
If you’ve been putting off photos because you feel awkward, unsure, or nervous, know that those feelings are completely normal, and they don’t disqualify you from having meaningful, authentic images.
Most clients who feel unsure at first quickly realize they’re far more natural in front of the camera than they expected. Sometimes, all it takes is the right environment, the right guidance, even a few simple props and the reassurance that you don’t have to do this alone.
If you have questions or would like to talk through what a session could look like, you’re always welcome to reach out. I’m happy to guide you through it.
